NEX-5 UV/IR Cut Filter

It Looks Just Like The OLY E-PL1 Cut Filter

Well, in trying to keep up with the promised discussion on the Full Spectrum Infrared Conversion on the NEX-5, I wanted to share with you the information on its internal UV/IR Cut Filter (Hot Mirror).  As you can see from the images shown here it is almost identical to the Olympus version found in the E-PL1 camera system.

LDP CC1 UV/IR CUT FILTER DATA CHART

LDP CC1 Filter

As you can see it had a deep Aqua coloring on one side that is impregnated into the glass, this is the same as the LDP CC1 filter, and on the other side it has the gold sheen (B+W 486) applied to it only a molecule thick. Between these 2 filters/coatings you get a really tough IR cut filter that blocks most of the IR energy that tries to make it through to the sensor.

I am getting pretty good normal color images with this camera using LDP’s CC1 UV/IR Cut Filter in 52mm (again, why would Sony use 49mm filter threads?)

  1. Hello, Thanks for the great website! I have gotten a lot of good information off of it. I have a Panasonic G3 converted to Full Spectrum and I have tried several options to return it to normal color with AWB. I first tried the 486 by itself and of course got a reddish image. With custom wb i was able to get “normal” colors, but had cyan vingnetting at wide angle. I now the CC1 as well as Spencer Camera’s version (supposedly a little more aggressive in the UV range which would closer match the original hot mirror transmission spectrum) and both give me a greenish cast in AWB. I have yet to try stacking the 486 because i have concerns about cyan vignetting at wide angle. So my two questions are: did the Nex-5 have a similar response with just the CC1 (greenish tint), and do you have problems with cyan vignetting at wide angle when using the cc1 and 486 stacked?

    Thanks!

    • Thanks Tony, you should check out my main blog at http://www.markhilliardatelier.wordpress.com there is a lot of good info there as well.

YES! I had the same exact issues with the Nex 5 that you have until I stacked the CC1 and 486 together and then it returned to normal colors! Try one on top then the other to see what works the best. I suspect that the glass cover they put over the sensor is a little small and might be the cause of the vignetting due to light striking the corners then bouncing thru and an angle to hit the sensor.

  2. Hello,
By surfing on internet in search of information about infrared photography,
I stumbled on your wonderful blog!
In you read, you’ve convinced me to launch myself into the adventure!
I intend to convert my Sony NEX5 to infrared light and visible
    However, I notice various ways:

    1: Replace the internal filter
Kolarivion: full spectrum (for a and c solution) or two spectrum (for b solution)

2: Hoya R72 filter 49mm for infrared photographs surely another frequency filters in the future!

3: For return to normal ootin, I see different solutions

    a: filter LDP CC1 & B + W 486 52mm with 49mm adapter
b: Kolari Vision color correcting hot mirror filter (UV / IR cut filter) 49mm http://www.kolarivision.com/hotmirror.html
    c: Hoya UV / IR cut http://www.ephotozine.com/article/hoya-uv—ir-cut-filter-review-20088

With your experience what do you think or would you have another opinion?
    Sorry for my bad english
    In advance thank you
    Antoine

    • I like the Kolari 2 spectrum conversion where they replace the hot mirror with a UV blocking filter. Understand, this will cost you you in external filters for the various IR bands. This gives you the best of ALL worlds! You will find that you will zero in on 2 or 3 bands in the end, likely 590nm, 630nm and 720nm.

  3. Hi Mark

I decided to dig further into your blogs and see that I can achieve day to day photos with my Nex 5 using a LDP CC1

Any advice where I can get one,I guess it will be 52mm?

    Thanks

    Andy
